1
. Nomination for appointment of our "newest" steer Jack DeBell. Jack is able and interested in serving on the steering committee again. He plans to share information from the survey he conducted about surviving tough times. He’ll have this tabulated in the next week or so and can share it with steers, members, etc. In line with this, Jack would like to work on the urgent response letter we’ve talked about providing as a member service. He also has ties with APPA and would like to contribute to solidifying a better relationship between CURC and APPA and also with NWF. Additional tool kits (similar to the soft drink vending one) are also a possibility for Jack to develop. And he will be networking with CO schools to get those that are not NRC or CURC members to join. Jack was nominated (and seconded) for appointment to the steering committee with unanimous approval.

2. Baltimore wrap up

We about broke even on the workshop. The A/V equipment made up a significant amount of the expense. In the future, we should see if a local school could provide the equipment without the exorbitant fees. The workshop went well but we have not received evaluation information from NRC yet. Total attendance was 45 people (10 of which were comp’ed). We may be able to recoup sales tax, which as a non-profit NRC/CURC is exempt from paying. Angie has the notes from the CURC Business meeting and will type them up as a draft and forward them to the steers. The meeting was well attended and there were some new faces in the crowd.

CURC-related panels were all well done and timely. Baltimore was a good location and steers were pleased with the conference overall especially the amount of campus-related material. Karyn Kaplan did a wonderful job of pulling together the CURC sessions. Hopefully Karyn will be interested in continuing this work for future NRC congresses.

A somewhat sarcastic idea came up to include recycling rates in the US News & World report’s college ranking system. It would be nice to see some kind of recognized (and public) benchmarking of waste generation, recycling per capita, energy usage, etc. from one campus to another. We need to continue to encourage CURC members to post their campus information on our benchmarking table.

3. ABC's

Pete has not had a chance to deal with this yet but will work on moving forward with the chapters that are ready as soon as possible. Angie is having difficulty checking/confirming facts and references. There may be some chapters that are more difficult to verify than others. Pete thinks there are probably 4-5 chapters ready to go. Once these are finalized we will assess which chapters remain and work on review of them. Rob sent Karyn and Christine a thank you for their efforts.

4. Membership

Angie is planning to work with state organizations that have disaffiliated with NRC to see how we can bring the campus people from those states back to CURC. Also want to continue to try to work with affiliate ROs to get more campuses to join them and thus NRC/CURC. Pete asked about the list of non-CURC members we had at one time. No one recalls this list so Pete will contact Keefe Harrsion who worked on this a few years ago. Jack is interested in having CURC brochures for the APPA event he is speaking at in February. The stock is probably pretty low right now. Pete will contact Janice Cady at NRC about reprints. Angie will take a look at the brochure to see what it has in terms of membership.

5. Regional Workshop Partnerships

Still hoping to partner with state or other groups to work in a CURC session or separate workshop with their existing event. Pete and others did a few of these over the past year. CA is interested in working with CURC this year. TN has a college session at their state workshop – too late for this year but maybe next year we could work with them. Pat is going to attempt to get a current list of ROs so she and Carolyn can work on getting a notice out to them regarding planned conferences and CURC involvement. Julie Muir proposed doing something jointly with the CA collegiate group and the NRC Congress in San Francisco next year, which the Steering Committee enthusiastically endorsed

6. 04-05 Work Plan and Budget process

Depending on NRCs situation we will either get a formal request from them to submit a budget or we will submit one to them without solicitation. This would happen early next year so we need to begin thinking about what items are in our work plan and what monetary resources or staff time are necessary to accomplish these goals. Please review the minutes from the Baltimore steering committee meeting and the member meeting for our next call. With this information we can take time on the next call to address our work plan, member input and begin budget discussions. NRCs budget problems and the need to finalize agreement on the CURC account balance have made it challenging to address budget issues. Pete will contact the new NRC president about appointing a new board liaison for CURC.
